The hoagie's robust quality complements the flavorful ham, with a tangy crunch added by the Dijon peppers. Freshness is brought in by the lettuce, while the jalapeno aioli gives a subtle heat and garlicky flavor to the dish.

Ham and Dijon Pepper Ham Hoagie - leftover ham turned gourmet at home

Here is a recipe that transforms leftover ham into a fresh culinary adventure - the Ham and Dijon Pepper Ham Hoagie. This dish is a delightful blend of saltiness, savoriness, tanginess, and overall deliciousness. Even as someone who doesn't usually eat a lot of ham, I can attest to its appeal. My husband loves this dish and often enjoys the leftovers. The hoagie's robustness complements the rich salty ham, the Dijon peppers add a tangy crunch, the lettuce adds freshness, and the jalapeno aioli brings a subtle heat and garlicky kick to the dish.

Equipment

  • Cutting board

  • Mixing bowls

  • Saucepan

  • Spatula

Tips or Tricks

  • Place the lettuce first before adding the ham and peppers to your hoagie. This helps in keeping the sandwich from becoming soggy due to the juices from the ham and peppers.

Length of Time

  • Prep Time - 6 minutes

  • Cook time - 5 minutes

Servings

  • Serving Size: 1 sandwich

  • Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 4 Hoagie hotdog buns – cut in the middle on top

  • 2 cups ham sliced thin lengthwise

  • 8 pieces of lettuce (romaine or iceberg)

  • 1 cup sweet peppers julienne

  • ½ cup poblano julienned

  • 1 teaspoon coarse Dijon mustard

  • ½ cup mayonnaise

  • 2 teaspoons jalapeno diced and seeded

  • 1 large garlic minced

  • 1 teaspoon lime juice

  • Kosher salt

  • Black pepper

Directions

  1. Make pepper slaw, mixing peppers, Dijon, ½ teaspoon salt and pepper. Set aside

  2. Make jalapeno aioli, mix mayo, jalapeno, garlic, lime juice and dash of black pepper. Set it aside.

  3. Pan sear ham on medium heat in a saucepan. (Roughly 4 minutes – heat the meat thru and sear to your preference)

  4. Assemble sandwich. Spread aioli on the bottom, layer with lettuce, add ham, add peppers.

Notes

  • My husband also enjoys heating the peppers up in the microwave prior to adding them to the sandwich. Ham could also be heated in the microwave versus pan searing.
